Alternative Song History: The Songs That Shaped Alternative Rock

Background

Alternative rock has always been told best through its songs. This is the story of the music we play on The Alternative One, decade by decade, through the landmark tracks that shaped it: from the punk and post-punk roots of the late 1970s to the indie, modern rock and new artists on our charts today. Every song listed below comes from our list of the 100 best alternative rock songs of all time unless noted.

The roots: late 1970s punk and post-punk

Alternative rock grew out of punk. In New York, Talking Heads came out of the CBGB scene with Talking Heads: 77 and “Psycho Killer” (1977). In Manchester, Joy Division turned punk’s energy into something darker on Unknown Pleasures and the single “Transmission” (1979). Post-punk and new wave had begun. The 1980s: post-punk, new wave and college rock

The 1980s built alternative music outside the mainstream. Post-punk and new wave bands found audiences through independent labels and college radio, and American bands like R.E.M., The Replacements, Pixies and Sonic Youth laid the foundations of what came next. Our list of the 100 best alternative songs opens here, with Joy Division at No. 1. Explore the scene in What Is College Rock?.

The 1990s: grunge, Britpop and the alternative boom

The 1990s were alternative rock’s golden decade. Grunge broke through from Seattle, Britpop rose in the U.K., and the line between indie and mainstream all but disappeared. The 2000s: the indie and post-punk revival

A new wave of guitar bands brought sharp, danceable post-punk back. The Strokes, The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol led the way from New York and Detroit, while Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and LCD Soundsystem pushed indie rock in new directions. The 2010s: indie goes big

In the 2010s, indie and alternative acts filled arenas and topped streaming playlists. Psychedelic, synth-driven and garage-rock sounds all found huge audiences, and a new generation of songwriters emerged.

The 2020s: alternative today
