Tame Impala is the psychedelic project of Australian musician Kevin Parker, who writes, records, performs and produces the music himself. Formed in Perth in 2007, Tame Impala moved from fuzzy guitar psychedelia to the glossy synth-pop of Currents, and became one of the most influential sounds of the 2010s. The music is psychedelic pop and rock with indie rock and synth-pop textures.

Kevin Parker started Tame Impala in Perth, where he recorded songs largely alone. Early releases on Modular, including “Half Full Glass of Wine” and “Sundown Syndrome”, introduced a heavy, phased guitar sound. On stage, Parker leads a full live band.
The sound
Tame Impala’s early records draw on 1960s psychedelia: layered guitars, dreamy vocals and big drums. Currents (2015) swapped many of the guitars for synthesizers and grooves, and that shift helped blur the line between alternative rock, pop and dance music for a new generation of artists.
Kevin Parker
Parker is the songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer behind every Tame Impala album. His studio-craft approach, making detailed records alone and then translating them for a live band, is a big part of the project’s identity.
Legacy
Tame Impala changed what alternative music could sound like in the 2010s. Kevin Parker’s move from guitars to synthesizers on Currents showed that a rock artist could make dance-floor grooves without losing the psychedelic feel, and countless bedroom producers followed.
Because Parker records alone, Tame Impala also became a model for the one-person project: a single artist writing, playing and producing an entire album, then taking it on the road with a band.
