R.E.M. are the band that carried college rock from small-town Georgia to stadiums around the world. Formed in Athens in 1980, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry built alternative rock out of jangling guitars, mysterious lyrics and relentless touring. They are an alternative rock and college rock band, with jangle pop, folk rock and post-punk roots, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Formation
The four members met in Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia, and played their first shows in 1980. Their debut single, “Radio Free Europe”, came out on the small Hib-Tone label in 1981, and the band signed to I.R.S. Records for their early albums. College radio stations across the U.S. made them a word-of-mouth success long before mainstream radio caught on.
The sound
Early R.E.M. records are built on Peter Buck’s ringing, arpeggiated guitar, Mike Mills’s melodic bass and backing vocals, and Michael Stipe’s half-hidden, impressionistic singing. Over time the band moved toward clearer vocals, mandolin-led folk rock and, later, louder guitars and electronic textures, without losing the warmth that made them so recognizable.
Michael Stipe
Stipe’s lyrics, often cryptic in the early years and later more direct and political, are a big part of R.E.M.’s mystique. His voice on songs like “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts” made the band one of the most emotionally direct acts of the 1990s.
Legacy
R.E.M. showed that a band could come up through college radio and independent labels, keep its integrity, and still become one of the biggest groups in the world. Countless alternative and indie bands followed the path they mapped out in the 1980s.
They announced their breakup in 2011 after 15 studio albums, and their catalog remains a cornerstone of alternative rock radio. Read more in our guide to college rock.
