Few bands have had a greater impact on alternative rock than Soundgarden. Emerging from Seattle’s thriving underground music scene during the mid-1980s, the band helped establish what would later become known as grunge while creating a sound that blended heavy metal, classic rock, punk, and psychedelic influences.
Led by the extraordinary voice of Chris Cornell, Soundgarden became known for complex songwriting, powerful musicianship, unconventional time signatures, and emotionally charged performances. While many bands from the Seattle scene found commercial success, Soundgarden distinguished themselves by combining crushing guitar riffs with sophisticated arrangements and one of rock’s greatest vocalists.

Soundgarden formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984. The original lineup featured vocalist and drummer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Cornell soon moved exclusively to lead vocals, allowing the band to expand its sound, while Matt Cameron became the group’s longtime drummer.
Following Yamamoto’s departure, bassist Ben Shepherd joined in 1990, completing the classic lineup responsible for the band’s best-known recordings.
