Fontaines D.C. are the Dublin band that brought post-punk back to the center of alternative rock. Formed in 2014, the five-piece led by singer Grian Chatten has moved from raw, poetry-driven debut songs to the widescreen sound of Romance. They are an indie rock and post-punk band, and they have twice won International Group at the Brit Awards.

Formation
The members met in Dublin in the mid-2010s and bonded over poetry as much as music, self-publishing poetry collections before the band took off. The “D.C.” in the name stands for Dublin City. Early singles on Partisan Records, including “Boys in the Better Land” and “Too Real”, built the buzz for their debut.
The sound
Fontaines D.C. started as a sharp, spoken-sung post-punk band rooted in Dublin life. Each album has widened the palette: darker atmospheres on A Hero’s Death, Irish identity and grief on Skinty Fia, and a bigger, more colorful sound on Romance, their first album for XL Recordings.
Grian Chatten
Chatten’s heavily accented, half-spoken vocals and lyric-first approach are central to the band’s identity. He has also released solo work alongside his role in the band.
Legacy
Fontaines D.C. helped lead a new wave of guitar bands from Ireland and the U.K. that put lyrics, poetry and post-punk tension back at the center of alternative rock. Each album has sounded different from the last, which is a big reason critics and listeners keep following them.
Their rise from Dublin pubs to international festival stages, and Brit Awards for International Group, shows how a band rooted in one city can speak to a worldwide alternative audience.
