About the station
The Alternative One is a worldwide online radio station for modern rock and alternative music. We stream 24 hours a day, mixing the artists who built alternative music with the bands shaping it right now, and we publish band profiles, music history guides and monthly charts for listeners who want to go deeper.
Streaming services are brilliant at giving you more of what you already like. Commercial radio often plays the same handful of songs. We think there is still room for a station run by people who love alternative music and want to share it: a station that plays Joy Division next to this month’s breakout band because the connection is real.
Alternative music has always challenged convention, from college radio and post-punk clubs to grunge, Britpop and today’s new guitar generation. That spirit is what we program around.
Our programming spans decades of alternative music and keeps adding new artists:
You will hear artists such as The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, Nirvana, Radiohead, The Strokes, Interpol, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The National, M83 and The Midnight, alongside newer bands like Fontaines D.C., Wet Leg and IDLES, and artists from our Emerging Alternative Top 20.
Every song on The Alternative One is chosen by our programming team, not generated by a recommendation engine. We listen for originality, emotional connection and how a song fits alongside the artists around it. Our monthly charts are our editorial picks, not sales or streaming rankings, and we say so on every chart.
Independent artists can submit their music. We currently prioritize original music from touring artists. Submission never guarantees airplay, and we never accept payment for airplay.
Our editorial team writes and fact-checks the band profiles, history guides and charts on this site. Every article shows when it was last reviewed.
The Alternative One is one of the stations in the NextWave Broadcasting Network (NextWave Radio Group). Our sister stations include New Wave Radio, Yacht Rock Radio, Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio and Wild Country Radio. Each station has its own programming and playlists.
