Formation

Win Butler and Régine Chassagne formed the band in Montreal in 2001, and the lineup grew into a large group of multi-instrumentalists. Their debut album, Funeral, was released on Merge Records in 2004.

The sound

Arcade Fire’s songs build from simple ideas into big, communal crescendos, with strings, horns, accordion and chanted vocals alongside guitars and drums. Later albums added disco and dance-rock rhythms, especially on Reflektor.
