Talking Heads took the nervous energy of New York punk and fused it with funk, African rhythms and art-school ideas. Formed in New York City in 1975 by David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, who had met as students at the Rhode Island School of Design, and joined by Jerry Harrison in 1977, they became one of the most inventive bands of their era. They are a new wave and post-punk band, with art pop and funk influences.

Formation

Byrne, Weymouth and Frantz moved to New York and began playing at CBGB in 1975, alongside bands like the Ramones and Television. Jerry Harrison, formerly of the Modern Lovers, joined in 1977, the year their debut album Talking Heads: 77 came out on Sire Records.

The sound

Early Talking Heads songs are tight and wiry, built on Weymouth and Frantz’s locked-in rhythm section and Byrne’s jittery voice. Working with producer Brian Eno on three albums, the band layered polyrhythms, loops and funk grooves, peaking with Remain in Light in 1980.

David Byrne

Byrne’s odd, observational lyrics and restless stage presence defined the band. In the concert film Stop Making Sense (1984), directed by Jonathan Demme, his oversized suit became one of rock’s most famous images. He has continued with a long solo career.

Legacy

Talking Heads showed that punk could be smart, danceable and experimental at the same time, and their mix of art rock and funk runs through post-punk, new wave and modern indie. Weymouth and Frantz also formed Tom Tom Club, whose “Genius of Love” became widely sampled.

The band split in 1991 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Stop Making Sense returned to cinemas in a restored version in 2023.
