Depeche Mode started as four young synth-pop hopefuls from an English commuter town and became one of the most successful and influential bands in the world. Their move from bright electronic pop to dark, sensual, guitar-tinged anthems helped define alternative music for millions of listeners, and they have sold more than 100 million records.
Depeche Mode at a glance
Formed
1980, Basildon, Essex, England
Current members
Dave Gahan (vocals), Martin Gore (songwriting, guitar, keyboards, vocals)
Former members
Vince Clarke (1980β1981), Alan Wilder (1982β1995), Andy Fletcher (1980β2022)
Vince Clarke, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher were joined by singer Dave Gahan in 1980. Their debut album Speak & Spell (1981), with the hit “Just Can’t Get Enough,” was cheerful synth-pop written mostly by Clarke. When Clarke left to form Yazoo and later Erasure, Martin Gore became the main songwriter, and the band’s sound grew darker. Alan Wilder joined in 1982 and became a key musical architect.
The albums that defined them
Some Great Reward (1984)
Industrial textures and sharper themes, with “People Are People” and “Master and Servant.”
Black Celebration (1986) and Music for the Masses (1987)
The band’s gothic, moody sound took shape. “Never Let Me Down Again” and “Strangelove” became alternative radio staples. The 1988 tour finished with a famous concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, captured in the film 101.
Violator (1990)
Their commercial and artistic peak. “Personal Jesus,” with its bluesy guitar riff, and “Enjoy the Silence” made them global superstars and are now among the most covered songs of the era. “Policy of Truth” and “World in My Eyes” are just as essential.
Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993)
Rawer, with live drums and gospel influences. “I Feel You” and “Walking in My Shoes” are highlights. Wilder left in 1995.
Ultra (1997) to Spirit (2017)
As a trio, Depeche Mode kept releasing strong albums: Ultra (“Barrel of a Gun”), Exciter (2001), Playing the Angel (2005, “Precious”), Sounds of the Universe (2009), Delta Machine (2013) and Spirit (2017).
Memento Mori (2023)
Andy Fletcher died in May 2022. Gahan and Gore completed Memento Mori, an album about mortality, and its single “Ghosts Again” was widely praised as one of their best late-career songs. It still appears on our Synth-Pop Top 20.
Why Depeche Mode matter to alternative music
Depeche Mode proved electronic music could be emotional, dark and huge. They influenced industrial rock (Nine Inch Nails), alternative rock (The Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers) and nearly every synth-driven band since. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. Read how they fit between genres in New Wave vs. Alternative Rock.
