If you love Nirvana, you are probably chasing a feeling: loud, distorted guitars, a melody you can hum, and lyrics that sound like someone telling the truth. These are the bands that deliver it, from Nirvana’s Seattle peers to the artists who inspired them and the ones who followed.

Each pick comes with a reason it fits and one song to start with. Bands with a full profile on The Alternative One are linked.

Nirvana’s Seattle peers

1. Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam came out of the same Seattle scene and broke through at the same time. They are bigger and more classic-rock-leaning than Nirvana, but with the same emotional weight. Start with: “Alive”.

2. Soundgarden

Soundgarden were one of grunge’s pioneers, mixing heavy, metal-sized riffs with psychedelic touches. If you like Nirvana’s heavier side, this is the next stop. Start with: “Black Hole Sun”.

3. Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains are darker and heavier, with famously haunting vocal harmonies, and their songs share Nirvana’s bleak honesty. Start with: “Would?”.

4. Mudhoney

Mudhoney were formed by Mark Arm and Steve Turner after Green River, and their early Sub Pop records helped define the Seattle sound. Their 1988 single was one of grunge’s first calling cards: noisy, fuzzy and funny. Start with: “Touch Me I’m Sick”.

5. Screaming Trees

Screaming Trees, from Ellensburg, Washington, mixed grunge with psychedelic rock, and Mark Lanegan’s deep voice gave them a sound all their own. Start with: “Nearly Lost You”.

6. Mother Love Bone

This short-lived Seattle band, fronted by Andrew Wood, released one album, Apple (1990). After Wood’s death, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard went on to form Pearl Jam. Start with: “Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns”.

7. L7

L7 were labelmates of Nirvana and worked with Nevermind producer Butch Vig on Bricks Are Heavy (1992). Their riffs are loud, catchy and full of attitude. Start with: “Pretend We’re Dead”.

8. Hole

Courtney Love’s band paired raw, punk-edged noise with big hooks. Live Through This (1994) is their landmark album. Start with: “Violet”.

The bands that inspired Nirvana

9. Melvins

The Melvins, from Montesano, Washington, are one of the most influential early grunge bands, and they were close to Nirvana from the start: drummer Dale Crover played on Nirvana’s first demo in 1988. Expect slow, crushing riffs. Start with: “Honey Bucket”.

10. Pixies

Pixies invented the loud-quiet-loud dynamic that runs through so many Nirvana songs. If you love the jump from hushed verse to screaming chorus, this is where it came from. Start with: “Where Is My Mind?”.

11. Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth’s noisy, experimental guitars are a key influence on grunge, and Nirvana toured with them as their own star was rising. Start with: “Teen Age Riot”.

12. Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. combined huge, fuzzed-out guitar with laid-back, melodic vocals, a blend that grunge bands borrowed heavily. Start with: “Freak Scene”.

The bands that followed

13. Foo Fighters

Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl founded Foo Fighters in Seattle in 1994. The songs are more polished and anthemic, but the melodic power is unmistakable. Start with: “Everlong”.

14. The Smashing Pumpkins

Chicago’s The Smashing Pumpkins rose alongside grunge with layered, dreamy guitars and big, heavy dynamics. Start with: “Today”.

15. Stone Temple Pilots

San Diego’s Stone Temple Pilots broke through with Core (1992), a hard-hitting grunge-era debut. “Plush” won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. Start with: “Plush”.

16. Silverchair

Silverchair formed in Newcastle, Australia, as teenagers and released Frogstomp in 1995, when the members were only 15. It is pure grunge energy from the other side of the world. Start with: “Tomorrow”.
