Few bands have changed as much, or as successfully, as Arctic Monkeys. They started as teenagers from Sheffield writing sharp, funny songs about nights out, became the first great band of the internet age, then reinvented themselves as desert-rock riff merchants, slick R&B-tinged rockers and finally lounge-pop crooners. Through it all, Alex Turner has remained one of the best lyricists in British music.

Formation and the internet
School friends Turner, Cook, Helders and Andy Nicholson formed the band in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. They handed out demo CDs at gigs, and fans shared the songs online and on early social networks. By the time they signed to independent label Domino in 2005, crowds already knew the words. They became the definitive example of a band built through the internet, a story we cover in The Evolution of Indie Rock.
The albums
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006)
The fastest-selling debut album in U.K. chart history at the time, and it won the Mercury Prize. “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,” “When the Sun Goes Down,” “A Certain Romance” and “Fake Tales of San Francisco” are essential. Nick O’Malley replaced Andy Nicholson soon after.
Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007)
Faster and heavier, with “Brianstorm,” “Fluorescent Adolescent” and the beloved “505.”
Humbug (2009)
Recorded partly with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age in the California desert; darker and heavier. Try “Crying Lightning” and “Cornerstone.”
Suck It and See (2011)
Melodic and romantic, with “Reckless Serenade” and “Suck It and See.”
AM (2013)
The commercial peak. Slinky riffs, hip-hop-influenced drums and falsetto backing vocals made “Do I Wanna Know?,” “R U Mine?,” “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” and “Arabella” global hits. It is one of the most streamed rock albums of the century.
Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018)
A bold left turn into piano-led lounge pop and science fiction. Divisive at first, it has aged well. Start with “Four Out of Five” and “Star Treatment.”
The Car (2022)
Lush, orchestral and cinematic, with “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” and “Body Paint.”
Alex Turner
Turner’s lyrics moved from witty observations of Sheffield nightlife to dense, surreal wordplay. He also leads The Last Shadow Puppets with Miles Kane and wrote the soundtrack for the film Submarine.
Legacy
Arctic Monkeys connected the 2000s indie boom with today’s streaming generation. AM in particular introduced millions of younger listeners to guitar music, and its influence can be heard across modern rock and alternative pop.
