Radiohead could have been a one-hit wonder. Instead, the Oxford band followed “Creep” with a run of albums that made them the most respected and adventurous rock band of their generation. OK Computer predicted the anxieties of the digital age, Kid A blew up the idea of what a rock band should sound like, and In Rainbows rewrote the rules of releasing music.
| Formed | 1985, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England |
| Members | Thom Yorke (vocals), Jonny Greenwood (guitar, keyboards), Ed O’Brien (guitar), Colin Greenwood (bass), Philip Selway (drums) |
| Genres | Alternative rock, art rock, electronic, experimental |
| Breakthrough | “Creep” (1992), The Bends (1995), OK Computer (1997) |
| Hall of Fame | Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 2019 |
The five members met at Abingdon School and played together as On a Friday before signing with EMI’s Parlophone and renaming themselves after a Talking Heads song. Their 1992 single “Creep” became an unexpected global hit, especially in the U.S., and their debut Pablo Honey (1993) rode its success.
A huge leap in songwriting. “Fake Plastic Trees,” “Street Spirit (Fade Out),” “High and Dry” and “Just” showed a band far deeper than its first hit.
Their masterpiece and one of the most acclaimed albums ever made. “Paranoid Android,” “Karma Police,” “No Surprises” and “Let Down” explored alienation, technology and modern life. It won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.
Radiohead traded guitars for synthesizers, drum machines and jazz-inspired arrangements. Kid A debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. without traditional singles and won another Grammy. “Everything in Its Right Place,” “Idioteque,” “Pyramid Song” and “Knives Out” are essentials.
A blend of guitars and electronics, with “There There” and “2 + 2 = 5.”
Released online with a “pay what you want” model, a landmark in music distribution. It is also one of their warmest records: “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” “Reckoner,” “Nude” and “House of Cards.”
The King of Limbs is rhythmic and looping; A Moon Shaped Pool is orchestral and heartbreaking, with “Burn the Witch” and “True Love Waits.”
The members have stayed busy: Thom Yorke’s solo albums and The Smile (with Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner), Jonny Greenwood’s Oscar-nominated film scores, Ed O’Brien’s solo album as EOB, and Philip Selway’s solo records.
Radiohead showed alternative rock could keep reinventing itself without chasing trends. Their influence reaches across rock, electronic music and film scoring, and their release strategies changed how artists think about the music business.
