Green Day took punk rock from a tiny Berkeley club to stadiums around the world. With Dookie in 1994, they made punk fun, catchy and enormous for a new generation. A decade later, American Idiot turned them into one of the most important rock bands of the 2000s. More than thirty-five years in, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool are still playing to huge crowds.

Formation

Childhood friends Armstrong and Dirnt started playing together as teenagers in Rodeo, California, eventually calling themselves Green Day. They became regulars at 924 Gilman Street, the volunteer-run punk club in Berkeley, and released their early records on independent label Lookout! Records. Tré Cool joined in 1990.

The albums

39/Smooth (1990) and Kerplunk (1991)

Fast, catchy East Bay punk. Kerplunk sold well enough to attract major labels.

Dookie (1994)

Their major-label debut on Reprise sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and won a Grammy. “Basket Case,” “Longview,” “When I Come Around” and “Welcome to Paradise” brought punk back to mainstream radio. Some Gilman Street regulars called it a sellout; millions of new fans disagreed.

Insomniac (1995) and Nimrod (1997)

Darker and more varied. Nimrod included “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” an acoustic ballad that became one of their most famous songs.

Warning (2000)

Folk and power-pop influences, with “Minority.”

American Idiot (2004)

A punk rock opera about life in post-9/11 America. “American Idiot,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends” made it a global phenomenon and a Grammy winner for Best Rock Album. It later became a Broadway musical.

21st Century Breakdown (2009)

Another ambitious concept album and Grammy winner, with “Know Your Enemy” and “21 Guns.”

Later albums

¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! (2012), Revolution Radio (2016), Father of All… (2020) and Saviors (2024), which was hailed as a return to form.

Billie Joe Armstrong

Armstrong’s melodic gift and snotty, self-deprecating lyrics made Green Day both accessible and authentic. He is also one of rock’s most energetic frontmen.

Legacy

Green Day opened the door for the pop-punk boom of the late 1990s and 2000s, including Blink-182, and American Idiot proved punk could be politically ambitious and commercially huge at the same time.
