The Cranberries combined chiming guitars and Dolores O’Riordan’s soaring, unmistakable voice into some of the biggest songs of the 1990s. Formed in Limerick, Ireland, in 1989, the band broke through with “Linger” and “Dreams”, then went heavier with the protest song “Zombie”. They are an alternative rock band, with dream pop, jangle pop and Celtic influences.

Formation
Brothers Noel and Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler started the band in Limerick in 1989, and Dolores O’Riordan joined as singer soon after. They signed to Island Records, which released their debut album in 1993.
The sound
Early Cranberries songs are soft and dreamy, built on Noel Hogan’s ringing guitar and O’Riordan’s distinctive vocals with their Irish lilt and yodel-like breaks. On No Need to Argue they added heavier, grunge-influenced guitars.
Dolores O’Riordan
O’Riordan wrote the lyrics, including “Zombie”, written in response to a 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, England. She died in January 2018, and the band completed their final album from her vocal demos.
Legacy
The Cranberries were one of the most successful Irish bands of the 1990s, and “Zombie”, “Linger” and “Dreams” remain staples of alternative radio. Their final album, In the End (2019), earned the band their first Grammy nomination, for Best Rock Album.
