Modest Mouse went from cult indie heroes to platinum-selling hitmakers without losing their strange, restless edge. Formed in Issaquah, Washington, in 1992 by Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green and Eric Judy, they broke through with “Float On” in 2004 and topped the U.S. album chart in 2007. They are an indie rock band, with alternative rock and lo-fi influences.

Formation
Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green and Eric Judy formed Modest Mouse in 1992 in Issaquah, near Seattle. Their early albums on the independent label Up Records, including The Lonesome Crowded West (1997), built a devoted following.
The sound
Modest Mouse songs lurch between jagged, twitchy guitar and wide-open melodies, with Brock’s yelping vocals and darkly funny lyrics about life, death and the American landscape.
The breakthrough
After signing to Epic, the band released Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004), whose single “Float On” became a major hit. Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr then joined for We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2007.
Legacy
Modest Mouse are one of the defining Pacific Northwest indie bands, and The Moon & Antarctica (2000) is widely considered a classic. Founding drummer Jeremiah Green died in December 2022, and the band continues with Brock.
