Oasis were the biggest band of the Britpop era, built on Noel Gallagher’s anthems and Liam Gallagher’s snarling voice. Formed in Manchester in 1991, they released two of the fastest-selling British albums of the 1990s and played to huge crowds at Knebworth in 1996. They split in 2009 and reunited for a world tour in 2025. They are a Britpop and alternative rock band, with classic rock influences.

The sound
Oasis songs are big, direct and melodic: wall-of-guitar production, singalong choruses and swagger, drawing on the Beatles, the Sex Pistols and 1970s rock. Noel’s ballads, such as “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger”, became some of the best-known British songs of the decade.
Liam and Noel Gallagher
The brothers’ famous rivalry was part of the band’s story from the start. Noel left after a backstage fight in Paris in August 2009, ending the band, and both brothers went on to solo careers before announcing the reunion in 2024.

(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? made Oasis global stars, and their 1996 Knebworth shows remain a landmark of British rock. They were central to Britpop alongside Blur and Pulp.
