Nine Inch Nails brought industrial music into the mainstream and made it personal. Founded by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1988, the project mixed harsh electronics, metal guitars and raw emotion, and albums like The Downward Spiral made it one of the biggest alternative acts of the 1990s. They are an industrial rock band, with alternative rock, electronic and metal influences.

Reznor started Nine Inch Nails in Cleveland in 1988, writing and recording most of the music himself and touring with a rotating live band. The debut, Pretty Hate Machine, arrived in 1989.
The sound
Nine Inch Nails songs pair pounding drum machines and distorted synths with sudden quiet moments and Reznor’s confessional lyrics. The music can be brutal or fragile, often in the same song.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
Atticus Ross became an official member in 2016 after years of collaboration. Together, Reznor and Ross have also become award-winning film composers, winning Academy Awards for The Social Network and Soul, and in 2025 Nine Inch Nails released its first film score, for Tron: Ares.
Legacy
Nine Inch Nails took industrial music from clubs to arenas and influenced countless rock, metal and electronic artists. Johnny Cash’s 2002 cover of “Hurt” introduced the song to a new generation.
The band has won several Grammys, most recently Best Rock Song for “As Alive as You Need Me to Be” from Tron: Ares, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.
