He is an alternative rock artist who blends folk, hip-hop, funk, electronic and psychedelic music.

Beginnings
Beck grew up in Los Angeles and played in the city’s folk and anti-folk scene before “Loser” became a surprise hit. He signed to DGC, which released Mellow Gold in 1994.
The sound
Beck’s records cut and paste across genres: samples, slide guitar, drum machines, folk ballads and funk. Odelay is a collage of hip-hop and rock, Midnite Vultures is playful funk, and Sea Change and Morning Phase are quiet, heartfelt folk records.
Odelay
Made with the production duo the Dust Brothers, Odelay (1996) produced “Where It’s At”, “Devils Haircut” and “The New Pollution” and became one of the defining albums of 1990s alternative music.
Legacy
Beck showed that an alternative artist could move freely between styles and still have hits, and his genre-blending approach influenced many artists who followed. He was nominated for Album of the Year for Odelay and Midnite Vultures before winning it with Morning Phase in 2015.
