The Replacements were loud, messy and brilliant, and they wrote some of the most heartfelt songs in alternative rock. Formed in Minneapolis in 1979 by Paul Westerberg, brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson, and Chris Mars, they grew from a ramshackle punk band into college rock heroes. They are an alternative rock and punk rock band, with power pop and college rock influences.

Formation

The band started in Minneapolis in 1979 and signed to the local independent label Twin/Tone, which released their debut, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, in 1981. Tommy Stinson was still a young teenager when the band began.

The sound

Early Replacements records are fast, sloppy punk. As Westerberg’s songwriting grew, the band mixed that energy with power-pop hooks and raw, tender ballads. Their unpredictable live shows became legendary, for better and for worse.

Paul Westerberg

Westerberg’s songs about youth, loneliness and not fitting in made him one of the great songwriters of 1980s alternative rock. After the band split in 1991 he went on to a solo career.

Legacy

The Replacements were central to the college rock scene that came before the alternative boom, and their influence is easy to hear in later bands like Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Bob Stinson left in 1986 and died in 1995, and Slim Dunlap died in 2024. Westerberg and Tommy Stinson reunited the band from 2012 to 2015, and Tim was reissued with a new mix in 2023.
