What Is Post-Grunge? The Sound, the Bands and How It Differs From Grunge

Post-grunge is the sound of rock radio after grunge: thick, distorted guitars like the Seattle bands, but smoother, more melodic and built for the airwaves. It emerged in the United States in the early-to-mid 1990s, as grunge faded and record labels signed bands with a similar sound.

Here is what post-grunge is, how it differs from grunge, and the bands that defined its two big waves.

What post-grunge sounds like

Post-grunge keeps grunge’s heavy, distorted guitars but favors mid-tempo songs, pop song structures and polished production. Lyrically it tends to be more direct and first-person, often about relationships, romance and addiction. Over time it also drew on classic rock, pop rock, alternative metal and nu metal.

How post-grunge differs from grunge

  • Production: grunge was often raw and lo-fi; post-grunge is polished and radio-ready.
  • Labels: many early grunge bands started on independent labels like Sub Pop; post-grunge bands usually worked through major labels.
  • Songs: post-grunge leans on mid-tempo, pop-structured songs with big choruses.
  • Lyrics: grunge often used loose metaphors or third-person stories; post-grunge is more direct and first-person.

The first wave: mid-1990s

As grunge peaked, a group of bands brought its sound to a broader rock audience:

  • Bush: Sixteen Stone (1994) was certified six times platinum.
  • Candlebox: their self-titled 1993 album was certified four times platinum.
  • Collective Soul: Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid (1993).
  • Live: Throwing Copper (1994) was certified eight times platinum.
  • Foo Fighters: Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl’s band released its self-titled debut in 1995.
  • Silverchair: the Australian band’s debut Frogstomp arrived in 1995.

The second wave: late 1990s and 2000s

After Soundgarden’s 1997 breakup, which some saw as the end of original grunge, post-grunge moved to the center of mainstream rock:

  • Matchbox Twenty: Yourself or Someone Like You (1996) was certified 12 times platinum.
  • Creed: Human Clay (1999) was certified diamond.
  • 3 Doors Down: The Better Life (2000) was certified six times platinum.
  • Nickelback: “How You Remind Me” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Staind: Break the Cycle reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
  • Puddle of Mudd: “Blurry” reached No. 5 on the Hot 100.

Where the name came from

The term started out as a put-down, describing mid-1990s bands that critics saw as copying grunge. In 1995 Spin editor Charles Aaron even coined the synonym “scrunge”. Today, post-grunge is used simply as the name of a style that dominated rock radio for more than a decade.
