The White Stripes proved that two people, a guitar and a drum kit could make some of the biggest rock songs of the 2000s. Jack White and Meg White formed the band in Detroit in 1997 and built a raw, red-white-and-black world around blues, punk and garage rock. They are an alternative rock and garage rock band with blues rock roots, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025.

Formation
Jack and Meg White started the band in Detroit in 1997 and released early singles on local independent labels. Their self-titled debut came out in 1999, followed by De Stijl in 2000.
The sound
The White Stripes built everything from a minimal setup: Jack White’s distorted guitar and wailing voice, and Meg White’s simple, powerful drumming. Their songs pull from Delta blues, punk and 1960s garage rock, and their strict red, white and black look made them instantly recognizable.
Jack White
Jack White wrote and produced the band’s records. After the band ended in 2011 he continued with solo albums, other bands and his label, Third Man Records.
Legacy
The White Stripes were central to the garage rock revival of the early 2000s, alongside bands like The Strokes. “Seven Nation Army”’s riff has become one of the most famous in rock, chanted in stadiums around the world.
They announced their breakup in 2011, and their six studio albums remain essential listening for anyone who loves raw, guitar-driven rock.
