Background

Pulp spent more than fifteen years as outsiders before becoming one of the biggest bands of the Britpop era. Founded in Sheffield in 1978 by Jarvis Cocker, the band broke through with His ’n’ Hers and Different Class, which won the Mercury Prize. They are a Britpop band, with art rock, indie pop and alternative rock influences.

Formation

Jarvis Cocker started Pulp as a teenager in Sheffield in 1978. The band went through many lineups and years of little success, releasing It (1983), Freaks (1987) and Separations (1992) before signing to Island Records.

The sound

Pulp mix glam, disco, synths and indie guitars with Jarvis Cocker’s sharply observed, often funny and frank lyrics about class, love and ordinary life. Their songs feel like short stories set to music.

Jarvis Cocker

Cocker’s storytelling and stage persona made him one of the most recognizable frontmen of the 1990s. “Common People”, about a wealthy student who wants to live like ordinary people, became the band’s signature song.

Legacy

Pulp gave Britpop its sharpest social commentary, and Different Class remains one of the era’s defining albums. See where they fit in our story of the rise of Britpop.

After a long hiatus and reunions in 2011 and 2022, Pulp returned with More in 2025, their first studio album in more than twenty years.
