MGMT turned a college project into one of the defining sounds of late-2000s indie. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser met at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and their debut, Oracular Spectacular, gave the world “Time to Pretend”, “Electric Feel” and “Kids”. MGMT are an indie pop and synth-pop duo with psychedelic pop and indie rock influences.

Formation
VanWyngarden and Goldwasser started making music together as students at Wesleyan University in 2002, first under the name The Management. They became MGMT in 2005 and signed to Columbia Records, which released their debut album in 2007.
The sound
MGMT mix synthesizers, psychedelic guitars and big, chant-along melodies. Oracular Spectacular made them festival favorites, while later albums leaned into stranger, more experimental psychedelia before Little Dark Age brought back darker synth-pop hooks.
Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser
The duo write and produce together, with VanWyngarden as the main singer. Their refusal to simply repeat the success of their debut is a big part of their story and their cult following.
Legacy
MGMT’s early singles became anthems for a generation of indie fans and were nominated for Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. The Justice remix of “Electric Feel” won the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording.
Their blend of indie rock and electronic pop paved the way for many of the synth-heavy alternative acts that followed, and “Little Dark Age” found a whole new audience years after its release.
