The Smashing Pumpkins were the most ambitious band of 1990s alternative rock. While Seattle bands stripped rock down, Billy Corgan built it up: layers of overdubbed guitars, orchestral arrangements, shoegaze haze and arena-sized riffs, all wrapped around songs about childhood, longing and escape. They were often filed with grunge, but they came from Chicago and sounded like no one else.
| Formed | 1988, Chicago, Illinois |
| Classic lineup | Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar), James Iha (guitar), D’arcy Wretzky (bass), Jimmy Chamberlin (drums) |
| Genres | Alternative rock, shoegaze, dream pop, hard rock |
| Breakthrough | Siamese Dream (1993) |
| Biggest album | Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) |
Corgan and Iha started the band in 1988, adding bassist D’arcy Wretzky and jazz-trained drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Their debut album Gish (1991), on independent label Caroline Records and produced by Butch Vig, mixed heavy psychedelic riffs with dreamy, almost gothic passages. It was one of the best-selling indie releases of its year.
A swirling, heavy debut. Start with “Rhinoceros,” “I Am One” and “Siva.”
Made under enormous pressure, with Corgan playing much of the guitar and bass himself, Siamese Dream is a wall-of-sound classic. “Today,” “Cherub Rock,” “Disarm” and “Mayonaise” are among the best alternative songs of the decade.
A 28-song double album that debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and became one of the best-selling double albums of all time. It covers everything from the punk fury of “Zero” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” to the strings of “Tonight, Tonight” and the wistful “1979.” “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” won a Grammy.
After Chamberlin’s departure, the band turned to drum machines, synths and gothic ballads. Misunderstood at the time, “Ava Adore” and “Perfect” now sound ahead of their era.
Chamberlin returned for these concept records before the band split in 2000. Machina II was famously released free online.
Corgan revived the band in 2006. Zeitgeist (2007), Oceania (2012) and Monuments to an Elegy (2014) led to the return of James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin in 2018. Since then the band has released Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 (2018), Cyr (2020), the three-part rock opera Atum (2022β2023) and Aghori Mhori Mei (2024), which returned to heavy guitars.
Corgan’s nasal, unmistakable voice and huge creative ambition defined the band. He wrote most of the songs and pushed every album toward a bigger concept. Love him or argue with him, few rock songwriters of his generation have been as prolific or as willing to change direction.
The Smashing Pumpkins proved that alternative rock could be grand and emotional without losing its edge. Their layered guitar sound influenced later shoegaze revivalists, emo and post-hardcore bands, and the modern heavy alternative scene. They remain a major live draw, and our concert guide tracks their current tour dates.
Nirvana, Hum, Failure, Catherine Wheel, Alice in Chains, Deftones and Muse.
In 1988 in Chicago.
Not strictly. They emerged at the same time and shared some of grunge’s heaviness, but their sound draws just as much on shoegaze, psychedelia, metal and dream pop.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995).
Yes. Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin continue to record and tour.
The Smashing Pumpkins cross every line we program, from grunge-era guitar walls to dreamy shoegaze and synth-driven alternative. Catch it on Where Modern Rock Meets Grunge, check the radio show schedule, or press play on the live stream. Want a specific song? Send a request or dedication.
