Garbage blended alternative rock guitars with electronic loops and pop hooks, and gave the 1990s one of its great frontwomen. Formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1993 by producers Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker with Scottish singer Shirley Manson, the band broke through with their 1995 debut and recorded a James Bond theme. They are an alternative rock and electronic rock band, with pop and post-grunge influences.

The sound
Garbage layered distorted guitars over samples, loops and drum machines, creating a polished, studio-built sound that set them apart from grunge. Manson’s cool, defiant vocals tie it together.
Shirley Manson
Born in Edinburgh, Manson is the band’s singer and lyricist, and one of the most recognizable voices in alternative rock. She has long spoken out on women’s place in the music industry.
Legacy
Garbage’s first two albums made them one of the biggest alternative acts of the late 1990s, and they recorded the theme for the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough in 1999. They have kept recording, releasing their eighth album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, in May 2025.
