LCD Soundsystem made dance music for people who love rock, and rock music for people who love to dance. Started by James Murphy in New York in 2002, the band grew from a series of club singles into one of the most acclaimed acts of the 2000s. They are a dance-punk and electronic rock band, with post-punk and indie influences.

James Murphy co-founded the New York label DFA and launched LCD Soundsystem with the 2002 single “Losing My Edge”, a funny, self-aware song about getting older in a fast-moving music scene. The self-titled debut album followed in 2005.
The sound
LCD Soundsystem songs build slowly from simple grooves into big, emotional peaks, mixing analog synths, cowbell and punk energy with Murphy’s wry, heartfelt vocals. Their influences range from Talking Heads and Brian Eno to classic disco and house.
The farewell and the return
The band announced it was ending and played a long farewell show at Madison Square Garden in April 2011, captured in the film Shut Up and Play the Hits. They reunited a few years later and released American Dream in 2017, which won a Grammy.
Legacy
LCD Soundsystem helped define the New York dance-punk sound of the 2000s, and songs like “All My Friends” and “Someone Great” are regularly ranked among the best of the decade. Their mix of electronic music and indie rock influenced a generation of bands, including MGMT.
