Formation
Alex Kapranos, Bob Hardy, Nick McCarthy and Paul Thomson formed the band in Glasgow’s art scene in 2002 and signed to Domino Records. Their self-titled debut came out in 2004 and won the Mercury Prize that year.
The sound
Franz Ferdinand built their songs on angular guitars, disco hi-hats and sudden tempo shifts, aiming, as the band often said, to make music that people could dance to. Kapranos’s arch, witty lyrics sit on top.
Alex Kapranos
Kapranos is the band’s singer and main songwriter. Franz Ferdinand also teamed up with Sparks as FFS for an album in 2015.
Legacy
“Take Me Out”, with its famous tempo change, became one of the defining indie songs of the 2000s and helped bring post-punk sounds back into the mainstream, alongside bands like Interpol and The Strokes.
After lineup changes, the band released The Human Fear in January 2025, the first album with drummer Audrey Tait and guitarist Dino Bardot.
