Weezer have been writing big, nerdy, guitar-heavy pop songs since 1992. The Los Angeles band led by Rivers Cuomo broke through with the Blue Album in 1994, and three decades later they are still releasing music and topping our charts. They are an alternative rock and power pop band, known for crunchy guitars, huge choruses and self-deprecating humor.

Weezer (the Blue Album, 1994)
Formation
Weezer formed in Los Angeles in 1992 around singer and songwriter Rivers Cuomo and drummer Patrick Wilson. Their debut, produced by Ric Ocasek, arrived in 1994 and turned “Undone ”, “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain” into alternative radio staples.
The sound
Weezer pair distorted, power-chord guitars with sweet, singalong melodies. The mix of heavy riffs and pop songwriting made them a bridge between grunge-era alternative rock and the pop-punk and emo bands that followed. Several of their albums are self-titled and known by the color of the cover: Blue, Green, Red, White, Black and Gold.
Rivers Cuomo
Cuomo writes the band’s songs and is famous for his prolific output and unguarded lyrics. The raw, confessional Pinkerton (1996) was misunderstood at the time but later became one of the most loved albums of the era.
Legacy
Weezer are one of the most influential American alternative bands of the 1990s. The Blue Album’s mix of fuzzed-out guitars and pure pop melody showed a generation of bands that heavy and sweet could live in the same song.
Their willingness to change styles, release music constantly and laugh at themselves has kept them in the conversation for more than thirty years, and new songs like “We Might As Well Be Strangers” keep them on alternative radio today.
