Clan of Xymox are one of the founding bands of darkwave. Formed in the Netherlands in the early 1980s, they signed to the influential British label 4AD and made records that blended cold electronics, gothic guitars and haunting melodies. More than forty years later, Ronny Moorings is still leading the band, and today’s dark synth-pop artists owe them a clear debt.

The 4AD years
After an independently released debut EP, the band came to the attention of 4AD, the label of Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, which had a reputation for atmospheric, beautifully packaged records. Their self-titled album Clan of Xymox (1985) is a darkwave landmark, and guitarist Frank Weyzig’s playing, including his haunting part on “Cry in the Wind,” helped define its sound.
Medusa (1986) followed, with “Michelle” and “Louise” becoming club favorites in the gothic and new wave scenes.
Xymox and the return of the Clan
At the end of the 1980s the band shortened its name to Xymox, signed to a major label and moved toward a brighter, dance-oriented sound on Twist of Shadows (1989), which brought the club hits “Obsession” and “Blind Hearts.” After a period of change in the 1990s, Moorings revived the Clan of Xymox name and returned to the darker sound that fans loved. The band has released a long run of albums since, and continues to tour Europe and North America.
Why Clan of Xymox matter
Clan of Xymox were among the first bands to merge the cold electronics of synth-pop with the dark romanticism of gothic rock, a combination that became darkwave. Their influence runs through today’s dark synth-pop and coldwave artists, including several on our Synth-Pop Top 20, such as Boy Harsher.
